Slips & Trips at Work Compensation Claims
Slips and trips are the most common cause of major injuries at work. 95% of major slips result in broken bones and they can also be the initial cause for a range of other types of accident; like a fall from height.
Over 1/3 of all reported major injuries to the Health & Safety Executive are slips and trips and there were 4 fatalities from this type of accident in 2009-2010. It is evident that this is a very serious type of accident which is occurring on an all too frequent basis.
HSE reports indicate that there are so many slips and trips in the workplace due to a number of factors:
- People not taking the risks seriously
- Little understanding of the causes of slipping
- Thinking that slips and trips are inevitable
- Poor application of risk assessment and management controls.
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations) 1992 require floors to be suitable for the workplace and work activity, kept in good conditions and kept free from obstructions. If your workplace floor does not adhere to these standards, or is not suitable for the use which it is placed for, it creates a tripping and slipping hazard which puts you at risk!
Some workplaces have a higher proportion of slips and trips to others and present their own unique hazards. In the catering industry slips and trips cause 75% of all reported serious injuries and 33% of all injuries. Of these around 86% are slipping accidents. In this industry a slip can have particularly severe consequences as those falling may attempt to stop themselves by using their arms. This can result in severe burns, or accidents involving sharp kitchen instruments such as knife which can have fatal consequences.
