Industrial Diseases

People working in industries such as engineering, manufacturing, mining, construction and other industries may be exposed to a number of safety risks through their employment. It is the employer’s responsibility to provide protective equipment and to carry out risk assessments to prevent exposure to industrial diseases. If the employer fails to take sufficient safety precautions, they have been negligent and if you sustain injury as a result, you may be entitled to claim compensation.

Common Industrial Diseases

  • Vibration White Finger – This can arise from the continuous use of power tools such as chainsaws, power drills, jigsaws and road breakers and causes the finger or fingers to turn white and painful in cold weather and suffer from a lack of manual dexterity.
  • Mesothelioma – This is a form of cancer which affects many organs including the lungs and is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. People working with cement, roof shingles, flooring products or carrying out extensive DIY may be particularly at risk. Symptoms may include chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue and unexplained weight loss.
  • Industrial Deafness – This can be caused by exposure to loud noises and can result in the injured person experiencing constant ringing in the ears (tinnitus), muffled hearing or in extreme cases, perforated eardrum. Employers have a responsibility to provide workers with protective hearing equipment such as earplugs or earmuffs.
  • Chemical Injury – exposure to chemical agents can cause physical and psychological injuries depending upon the chemical involved. For instance, exposure to certain chemicals can result in skin conditions such as dermatitis or vitiligo or breathing conditions such as asthma.
