Cartel Client Review in liquidation

5th July 2010

MANCHESTER-based claims management firm Cartel Client Review has been placed into compulsory liquidation following a court hearing.

The move came after HM Revenue & Customs issued a winding up order over unpaid taxes. The scale of the debts was not disclosed in papers filed with Companies House.

In March the Ministry of Justice suspended Cartel Client Review's licence after receiving complaints from the public.

Claims management companies, like Cartel, promise to get their clients' credit card debts and other loans written off through legal loopholes. They receive commission for passing claims on to law firms which then pursue them through the courts.

Soon after Cartel lost its licence the law firm it worked closely with, Consumer Credit Litigation Solicitors (CCLS), was shut down by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for "suspected dishonesty".

Cartel Client Review was owned and managed by Warrington-based Carl Wright who also jointly owned CCLS with Nottinghamshire-based Richard Burley. The SRA is continuing to investigate CCLS and Mr Burley is due to face allegations of professional misconduct at an SRA tribunal.
