Four out of five wins in mini-revival - TRAFFORD 2 v 0 Wakefield
Trafford made it four league wins out of five on Saturday as their mini-revival continued with a 2-0 victory over Wakefield at Shawe View.
In a generally scrappy encounter, neither side was able to master the blustery conditions, although it was the visitors who created the first chance in the 6th minute when Lawrance Hunter broke down the left and crossed for Danny Smith to fire over from 15 yards.
Trafford midfielder Danny White then curled a shot just over before Wakefield's giant midfielder Marc Roberts headed onto the roof of the net following a left wing corner.
In the 26th minute Trafford captain Paul Ashton skipped past three defenders and curled in a drive that was heading for the top corner before Jan Zolna produced a brilliant save to tip the ball over the bar.
Joe Shaw broke through on the left but shot straight at Zolna before the deadlock was broken seconds before the interval when Warren Collier pulled the ball across the face of the Wakefield goal and Danny White tapped in from close range.
Following a short delay in which referee Durbin was forced to retire with an ankle injury Trafford resumed control and in the 48th minute new striker Tom Bentham was desperately unlucky to see his beautifully struck 'goal' disallowed for offside.
Bentham had another great chance shortly afterwards when he broke clear down the centre but Zolna left his line to gather. Simon Gallanders then fired wide from 30 yards and Warren Collier blasted in a tremendous effort from 25 yards that Zolna finger-tipped to safety.
In the closing minutes both teams were denied what looked like obvious penalties as the substitute referee struggled to maintain control but the scoring was completed when Trafford substitute Scott Barlow intercepted a weak back pass and guided the ball home from an acute angle.
Although they failed to reach the heights of Wednesday night's magnificent victory at Witton Albion, Trafford thoroughly deserved the three points but their new found confidence will be put to a severe test on Tuesday night when high flying Skelmersdale United are the visitors to Shawe View for a league fixture kicking off at 7-45 p.m.
