Why make a will? The benefits
- Peace of mind
- You decide how your assets are shared. Without a will, the State directs who inherits what, so friends, family and favourite charities may get nothing
- Having your affairs in order, leaving clear instructions to provide for your spouse or civil partner and family, avoiding future disputes
- You can choose who will administer your estate (your executors) and set out what kind of funeral you’d like
- You can make proper financial arrangements for your children – if under 18 at the date of your death – as well as appointing a guardian to look after them
- Reduce or eliminate inheritance tax (IHT) so that you don’t pay more IHT than necessary
